Volleyball Drops Five Set Heartbreaker to Christopher Newport

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (2-2) dropped a five set heartbreaker to the Christopher Newport Captains (4-3) to open play on Friday night at the Mary Washington Invitational in Fredericksburg.

Christopher Newport took the first set 25-20 before the Royals won the second and third sets with identical scores of 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, but the Captains took the final two sets by scores of 26-24 and 15-12 to win the match in five.

In the second set, the Royals were able to pull away with four straight points to take a 20-13 lead and eventually won the set 25-19. A set later, things were tied at 16 apiece and after Scranton took a 21-19 advantage, the Royals captured the final four points to take the lead in the match for the time being.

From there however, Christopher Newport rallied in both the fourth and fifth sets to take the match.

Senior Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led the Royals with 21 kills on the evening, while sophomore Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) added 13 and junior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.Y./Westfield) chipped in with 11 of her own.

Fellow seniorCaileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added 21 assists and 10 digs for Scranton.
