Freshman Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) and junior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) of The University of Scranton men's and women's soccer teams both scored game-winning goals in Saturday's Landmark Conference Championship games and have been named Co-Scranton Athletes of the Week for the period ending Nov. 6, 2022.
This marks the first career Scranton Athlete of the Week honor for both student-athletes.
Scavino helped lead the Royals to the program's third Landmark title as he scored the lone goal of the game in the 36th minute of Saturday's 1-0 victory over Elizabethtown. The Succasunna, N.J., native took a feed from sophomore Seamus O'Keefe (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and slotted a shot past the charging Blue Jays goalie.
The goal was Scavino's third of the season with two having come in his last four games.
For Tantala, the junior received a pass from senior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and broke a scoreless tie with just 0:13 left as she buried a shot into the upper left corner of the net to give the Royals a 1-0 lead over Drew in the waning seconds of regulation. The Landmark title was Scranton's third straight and fifth in six seasons.
Both of Tantala's goals this season have been game-winners.
The men's and women's soccer programs will both find out their respective NCAA Tournament opponents this afternoon with the men's selection show at 1:30 and the women's selection show at 2 p.m.
