SCRANTON, PA (October 29, 2022) -- The University of Scranton women's soccer team took down Juniata 3-0 on senior day at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals improve to 14-2-1 on the season and will be the top seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs.
Scranton came out of the gates firing as they took five shots in the opening eight minutes. Junior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Tappan Zee) opened up the scoring on the day with a header off a corner kick from fellow junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) to give the Royals a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. The goal marked Healy's tenth of the season.
The Royals held a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.
Senior Claire Sites (Collegeville, Pa. / Spring-Ford Area) got her name on the score sheet in the 47th minute when she recieved a cross from junior Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) and buried her shot into the near post to put the Royals up 2-0.
Just three minutes later senior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Merion Mercy Academy) scored a banger from long-range to make it 3-0 in favor of Scranton. Junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) set the play up with a perfect pass and Hegarty ripped a shot into the upper shelf for her third goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) got the start in goal before being relieved by fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Torres (Morganville, N.J. / Colts Neck) for the final 15 minutes.
The Royals dominated the stat sheet and outshot Juniata 23-0 in the contest while holding a 12-0 advantage in corners.
The women's soccer team will get set to host Catholic on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the Landmark Conference semifinals at Weiss Field.
