SCRANTON, PA (September 17, 2022) -- Junior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) scored the eventual game winner in the 32nd minute to lead The University of Scranton women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals move to 4-1-1 on the season with the win.

Stevens took to the attack first as they fired off a shot in the oprning minute of action. Scranton had its first opportunity of the game in the fourth minute as junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) saw her effort saved by Stevens' goalkeeper Dana Perry.

Freshman Lindsay Sundheimer (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury) ripped a one touch shot off a corner kick in the 14th minute but missed high of the frame. The Ducks then followed up minutes later with a corner kick chance of their own but sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) was up to the test and made the save for Scranton.

After getting subbed on in the 24th minute, Tantala made her mark on the game as she capitalized on a great opportunity in the 32nd minute. Tantala recieved a perfectly placed pass from fellow junior Gabrielle Richetti (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem East) and tucked her shot into the bottom left corner of the goal leaving Perry no chance.

Scranton maintained its 1-0 lead headed into halftime.

The Ducks searched for an equalizer in the second half but Olson and the Royals' defense held strong and went on to secure the 1-0 win.

Stevens held a 10-9 shot advantage in the contest while Scranton won the corner kick battle 5-4. Olson made four saves in goal for the Royals.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to nearby Wilkes University for a 7:00 PM kickoff at Bruggeworth Field.
