KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Junior defender Rebecca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) of The University of Scranton women's soccer team etched her name into the annals of Royals program history on Thursday night, as she was selected to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division III All-America Team, earning a spot on the Second Team.
Russo becomes just the 13th University of Scranton women's soccer player to earn All-American honors in program history, with the previous 12 honorees nabbing the honor from USC's previous name the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
The 67th All-American in Scranton Athletics history, Russo also becomes the first Scranton women's soccer player to earn All-American honors since Chelsea Paskman was a Third Team All-America selection in 2010 and the first Second Team honoree since Paskman earned that honor in 2009.
For Russo, the All-America selection caps a banner junior campaign as the leader of one of the strongest back lines in the country.
In all, the unit helped Scranton complete a 16-2-3 2018 season, in which they started the year unbeaten at 13-0-2. The Landmark Conference runners-up, the Royals earned an at-large selection into the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament, where they won their First Round match-up with Arcadia, 3-1.
Throughout the month of November, Russo has racked up in the awards column. She was named the Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year, along with netting an All-Landmark Conference First Team selection, as well. Earlier this week, she earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team accolades from the USC, as well.
In 2018, Russo led a defense that was incredible all season, as the Royals allowed just 10 goals the entire 2018 campaign, which was good enough for one of the best goals against average in the entire country at 0.46 (18th best nationally). She also chipped in offensively for the year, scoring three goals, while successfully converting a penalty shot.
