SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (4-1, 4-1 Landmark) scored eight goals in the first 12 plus minutes of the game en route to a 14-7 win over the Moravian Greyhounds (3-3, 3-3 Landmark) on Wednesday evening at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Scranton sits in second place in the Landmark Conference with three regular season games remaining. The Landmark Conference Tournament is slated to begin on Saturday, April 24 and all seven teams will qualify for the postseason.
Freshman Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) opened the scoring at the 28:22 mark of the first half and Moravian briefly tied the game before seven unanswered goals from the Royals that included two goals from sophomore Caroline Miller (Huntington Beach, N.Y./Elwood-John H. Glenn). Sophomore Maggie Smith (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) capped the run with a tally at the 17:02 mark to extend the lead to 8-1 for the time being. The Greyhounds scored the next two goals to cut the lead to five, but Reich closed the first half scoring with her third of the day to make it a 9-3 game in favor of the hosts at halftime.
Scranton led 11-5 with 17:57 to play before scoring the next three goals to put the game out of reach as Smith, senior Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman Tara Kotten (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) found the back of the net to open up a 14-5 advantage.
Henson and Reich had a hat trick apiece and also added an assist to pace the Royals offensively, while Kotten notched a career-high four points on two goals and two assists. Miller and Smith both scored two goals apiece for head coach Chrissy Trescavage's squad and senior Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and junior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) were the other goal scorers on the day.
Junior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) notched four ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers for the Royals, while sophomore Erin Wheeler added two ground balls and a team-high four draw controls. McCusker added three draw controls, two caused turnovers and a ground ball to go along with her goal.
In goal for the Royals, senior Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made 11 saves and continues to rank in the top five of the Landmark Conference in multiple goalie statistical categories.
