WASHINGTON, D.C. - Host and eighth-ranked Catholic jumped out to a 5-0 first half lead and never looked back, as The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-8 decision to the Cardinals on Saturday in Landmark Conference action.
To start action on Saturday, Catholic raced out to a big lead that Scranton was unable to come back from right away, as after taking a 5-0 edge in the first 14 minutes, the Cardinals quickly countered back-to-back goals from Scranton to go up, 8-2, with 4:36 left in the first half.
The Royals, however, did end the first half strong, scoring two of the final three goals, as Catholic still held a 9-4 edge on Scranton entering the second half.
To start the second half, Scranton was first to attack, to cut the Catholic lead down to 9-5, but this was the closest the Royals came to the Cardinals lead the rest of the game. Eventually, Catholic opened an insurmountable 14-7 lead with 12:34 left, a deficit that was too much for Scranton to come back from.
Overall in the defeat, senior Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) once again led the offense, scoring twice.
Six other Royals scored one goal, apiece, on the day. They were: senior Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) (who also had four ground balls in the loss), sophomore Erin Wheeler (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic), freshman Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), sophomore Caroline Miller (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John H. Glenn), junior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell), and freshman Tara Kotten (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South).
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Moravian in Landmark action at Weiss Field. Things get underway at 5 p.m.
