SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (3-0, 3-0 Landmark) scored the first 11 goals of the game and rolled to an 18-6 win over the Susquehanna River Hawks (1-1, 1-1 Landmark) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.
The Royals have now scored 18 goals in each of their first three games and have started 3-0 for the third time in five seasons.
Senior Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the contest and junior Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored the next three goals to open up a 4-0 lead with 26:59 left in the first half. Freshman Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) got on the board at the 23:28 mark as the Royals continued the hot start to the game and freshman Tara Kotten (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) made it an 11-0 game with 6:31 to play in the half. Susquehanna got on the board with just under four minutes left in the opening stanza to cut the lead to 11-1.
The River Hawks were unable to get any closer than nine goals in the second half as Scranton outscored the visitors by a 7-5 margin led by three goals from Reich in the final 30 minutes. A goal from Kotten closed the scoring with 3:49 to play and made it an 18-6 game.
Reich paced the Royals with her second consecutive five-goal game, while Conklin added four goals and an assist on the afternoon. Henson and junior Jennifer Williams (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) both tallied hat tricks and Kotten scored a pair to round out the multi-goal scoring efforts for Scranton.
Reich leads the team and ranks second in the Landmark Conference with 12 goals on the season, trailed closely by Conklin and Henson who are tied for third with 11 goals apiece.
Junior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) notched a team-high four ground balls in the contest and recorded three draw controls, while sophomore Erin Wheeler (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) scooped up a pair of ground balls and three draw controls. In goal, senior Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made eight saves in the first half and sophomore Anna Tamke (Bernardsville, N.Y./Bernards) recorded one save over the final 30 minutes.
Junior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) added two ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers on the afternoon.
Nicole Hauck and Kelsey Homberg paced Susquehanna with two goals apiece in the setback.
