MADISON, N.J. – Six different players scored at least nine points and The University of Scranton women's basketball team (2-0, 2-0 Landmark) led for 38 of the 40 minutes in a 75-60 victory over the Drew Rangers (1-1, 1-1 Landmark) on Sunday afternoon at Simon Forum in Madison.
Scranton took a 34-28 into the locker room and outscored Drew by a 23-14 margin in the third quarter to break open the game with a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The Lady Royals have also now won all 82 matchups between the two teams.
Junior Danielle McCurdy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) paced the Lady Royals with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and was joined in double figures by sophomore Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) who had 13 points, freshman Maddie Hartnett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) who chipped in 11 points and sophomore Kyra Quigley (Drexel Hill, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) added 10 points of her own. Freshman Maddy Ryan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and junior Emily Shurina (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) tallied nine points apiece for head coach Nick DiPillo's squad.
Sekya Campbell led Drew with 14 points in the losing effort and Erin Frederick had 10.
Shurina hit a three to give Scranton a 10-5 lead in the early going and Drew cut the lead back to two before a Monaghan layup in the final seconds made it a 16-10 game after one quarter. The Rangers made it a 16-14 game with 8:49 left in the second quarter, but the Lady Royals quickly answered with consecutive three-pointers from Hartnett and Monaghan to stretch the lead to eight. The two teams would trade baskets for most of the quarter and Scranton took the afore-mentioned 34-28 halftime lead.
Scranton led 41-34 with 6:59 to play in the third quarter before a Quigley layup kickstarted a 16-8 run over the remainder of the quarter to open up a 57-42 lead after three. The Rangers were unable to get any closer the rest of the way and the Lady Royals led by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter at 72-50 following a jumper from freshman Leah Nolan (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) with 2:25 to play.
Scranton shot 36.1% (26-of-72) from the field and 25.8% (8-of-31) from three-point range, while Drew was 21-of-55 (38.2%) from the floor and 4-of-10 (40%) from deep. The Lady Royals connected on 15-of-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line.
The visitors held a 45-35 edge on the boards behind a game-high 11 rebounds from Quigley who matched her career high.
The Lady Royals return home to host Moravian in Landmark Conference action on Tuesday night at the John Long Center. Opening tip is slated for 7 p.m.
