SCRANTON, Pa. – Elizabethtown shot 50.9% from the floor and the No. 5 University of Scranton women's basketball team (11-2, 1-1 Landmark) fell to the Blue Jays (6-6, 2-0 Landmark) by a score of 78-70 on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center in Scranton.
Senior Emily Sheehan (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) hit a layup to tie the game for the Lady Royals at 65 with 3:56 to play, but Elizabethtown answered with a 7-0 run and a three-pointer from Veronica Christ made it 72-65 with 0:59 left.
Senior Makenzie Mason (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had a season-high 23 points to pace Scranton, while Sheehan added 13 and senior Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) had 10 points. Mason also tallied nine rebounds and five assists on the afternoon.
Christ led the way offensively for the Blue Jays with 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting and Mikayla Ruth had 16 points. Angie Hawkins contributed 11 points off the bench for Elizabethtown.
A jumper from Ruth gave the Blue Jays a 15-11 lead with 3:58 left in the first quarter, but the Lady Royals scored eight of the next 11 points and freshman Bridget Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J./Morristown-Beard) hit a three to take a 19-18 lead after one quarter. The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the second quarter before a 7-0 Elizabethtown run gave the visitors a 35-30 lead with 1:09 left in the half, but Scranton quickly responded and sophomore Emily Shurina's (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) three in the final seconds tied things at 35 apiece headed into the locker room.
Elizabethtown held a 45-41 lead with 5:38 left in the third quarter before a 7-0 run from the Lady Royals that included five points from Mason made it a 48-45 game at the 4:07 mark. The Blue Jays answered with consecutive three-pointers and took a 57-56 lead into the fourth quarter. Senior Lily Warhaftig's (Harlem, N.Y./Poly Prep) layup in the opening seconds of the fourth gave the Lady Royals the lead back, but a three from Christ made it a 63-58 game in favor of the visitors with 7:17 to play. Junior Taylor Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) connected on a layup and kickstarted a 7-2 spurt for Scranton and consecutive layups from Sheehan tied the game at 65 apiece.
The Lady Royals shot 28-of-67 (41.8%) from the floor and 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three-point range, while hitting 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line. Elizabethtown was 27-of-53 (50.9%) from the field and sank 10-of-21 (47.6%) from three to go along with a 14-of-18 mark (77.8%) at the charity stripe.
Scranton held a slight 34-33 edge in the rebounding battle led by the nine rebounds from Mason and seven from Shurina.
Head coach Nick DiPillo's squad will hit the road to battle Moravian in a Landmark Conference tilt on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
