The University of Scranton men's and women's basketball teams will open their 2017-18 seasons on Friday night, officially beginning the quest to defend the Landmark Conference titles that both teams won last season.
The Royals get their season underway in the Long Center when they host the Hilton Scranton Invitational opening round on Friday night. The event begins with Pitt.-Bradford taking on York (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m., followed by Penn State-Berks facing the Royals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's third-place game tips off at 2 p.m., followed by the championship game at 4 p.m.
Admission each day is $5 for adults (ages 18-60) and $3 for seniors (61 and older) and students (7-18). Children younger than 7 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. All University students, faculty and staff are also admitted free of charge with Royal ID.
The Lady Royals will travel to nearby Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for the second annual Cross-County Challenge, an event that features four local schools in a two-day event. Scranton will face King's on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Marywood taking on Wilkes at 8. On Saturday, the Lady Royals play Wilkes in the second game at 4 p.m. King's takes on Marywood at 2 p.m.
Admission each day is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students. Children 5 and younger are admitted free of charge.
Both Scranton teams have been receiving attention in preseason polls. The Lady Royals are ranked 13th in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association preseason top 25, and 19th in the D3hoops.com top 25. They were a close third in the Landmark Conference preseason poll.
The men's team is ranked 24th in the D3hoops.com preseason top 25 and was the overwhelming favorite in the Landmark Conference preseason poll.
