SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton softball team (6-0, 6-0 Landmark) continued its hot start to the 2021 season with a doubleheader sweep of the Drew Rangers (4-6, 4-6 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Magis Field in Scranton.

The Royals took game one by a score of 8-0 in six innings and won the nightcap 10-1 in five innings.

Game One

Senior Jennifer Sweeney (Wind Gap, Pa./Dumont) allowed just four hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts in six scoreless innings as the Royals cruised to the 8-0 win in game one. Sweeney earned the win to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Sweeney also got it done at the plate with a two-run blast in the first inning to open the scoring and give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Scranton tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth including an RBI single from graduate student Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) to make it a 4-0 game for the time being.

DeSarno struck again with an RBI single in the sixth as the Royals plated four runs in the inning and ended the game. Freshman Jessica Stadler (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) added an RBI single of her own in the frame and graduate student Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) reached on an error to bring home the eighth and final run of the game.

Bailey Comeau surrendered eight runs (five earned) on nine hits while walking two and fanning three over 5 2/3 IP and was dealt the loss for the Rangers.

DeSarno was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored on the afternoon and now sits just two shy of 100 career hits, while junior Heather Alich (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) also added a pair of hits in the game for head coach Mia Collarini Wascura's squad.

Game Two

Scranton scored in all four innings they batted in and cruised to a 10-1 victory over the Rangers in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

A single and two walks loaded the bases with nobody out in the home half of the first inning to set the stage for Sweeney's two-run single that opened the scoring. In the second inning, the Royals benefitted from two Drew errors and senior Maggie Donnelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) plated a run via an RBI single, Zinn drew a bases loaded walk and Sweeney reached on a fielder's choice to open up a 5-0 lead.

Senior Meaghan Dowdell (Parlin, N.J./Old Bridge) registered the win for the Royals after allowing just one run on three hits while fanning two in five innings of work.

A three-run third inning made it an 8-0 game as Stadler plated a run with an RBI groundout and sophomore Lauren Cawley (Duryea, Pa./Scranton Prep) came through with an RBI single before stealing second to allow Donnelly to score. Junior Brianna Lehr (Byram Township, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) closed the scoring with a two-run double in the fourth inning as the Royals stretched the lead to 10-0.

Lehr was 2-2 on the day with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored, while Sweeney was 2-3 with three RBI in the game. Donnelly and Stadler each knocked in a run and scored two runs for the Royals.

Carly Smith gave up the 10 runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking six in four innings.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Drew. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m.
