Sophomores Matt Mills (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) put together standout performances in The University of Scranton men's and women's swimming & diving teams home opener in the Byron Center on Saturday. As a result, they have both been named Landmark Conference Athletes of the Week for swimming & diving.
Mills captured the men's award by winning two individual races, adding a second place and swimming on a winning relay team in a 148-114 loss to Catholic. He won the 50 freestyle in 22.37 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 1:59.27, and was second in the 200 individual medley, losing by only a second to the defending conference champion.
Mills also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team that opened the meet by winning in a time of 1:37.81.
Byrne won all four events she swam in, two individual races and two relays. She swam the anchor leg on the 200 freestyle relay team that needed to win for the Royals to capture the meet. When Byrne hit the water, the Royals held a lead of just .02 seconds. By the time she finished, Scranton won the race by more than a second and took the meet, 135-127, over Catholic.
Earlier in the meet, Byrne swam on the winning 200 medley relay team and also won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.66 and the 100 freestyle in 55.20 seconds.
The men's and women's swimming & diving teams will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 2, when they host King's at 5 p.m. in the Byron Center.
