WASHINGTON, DC (September 24, 2022) -- The University of Scranton men's soccer team fought hard on Saturday afternoon but a penalty kick in the 35th minute secured Catholic a 1-0 win at Carlini Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Royals move to 5-2-1 on the season following the conference opener.
Scranton forced an early save out of Catholic's goalkeeper Austin Coron as freshman Logan Campbell (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) put a header on frame in the 7th minute but saw his effort stopped.
The Cardinals were able to get on the score sheet in the 35th minute as Darius Siahpoosh converted on a penalty kick. The Royals pushed for an equalizer in the late stages of the first half but had two solid efforts saved by Coron off a corner in the 41st minute. Following another corner kick just seconds later, sophomore Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, Pa. / Marple Newtown) had his shot blocked in front of net.
Scranton continued to push the action in the second half, outshooting the Cardinals 5-3 in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net as Catholic held on to win 1-0.
Senior Brendan King (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield) recorded a team-high three shots while senior goalkeeper Aidan Hartey (Elkins Park, Pa. / St. Joseph's Prep) finished the game with four saves. The Royals held a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corners.
