SCRANTON, PA (September 3, 2022) -- The University of Scranton men's soccer team earned its first win of the season as sophomore Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, Pa. / Marple Newtown) scored the eventual game winning goal in the 80th minute in the Royals' home opener at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals advance to 1-1 on the season with win.

Scranton saw the first chance of the game as freshman Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J. / Gill St. Bernard's) nearly broke open the game in the first five minutes of action but saw his effort saved by Muhlenbergs' goalkeeper Ben Mulford.

Both sides continued to exchange blows throughout the majority of the first half until Scranton was awarded a penalty kick in the 41st minute off a handball from the Mules backline. Senior Kieran Francis (Ramsey, N.J. / Ramsey) seized the opportunity and tucked his shot into the bottom left corner to secure the first goal of his career and give the Royals a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.

Scranton wasted no time getting to work in the second half and added a second goal in the 50th minute courtesy of freshman Justin Curran (Media, Pa. / The Shipley School) who found the back of the net off a rebound in the box. Curran's goal also marked the first of his career as a Royal.

Less than five minutes later the Mules responded with their first goal of the game as Brandin Osborne cut Scranton's lead to just one goal with plenty of time remaining in regulation. The game became more physical as Muhlenberg searched for an equalizer in the late stages of the second half, but the Royals held strong and kept their composure.

In the 80th minute, Corr provided Scranton with a cushion as he recieved a pass from freshman Dean Finan (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) and ripped a shot with his left foot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Muhlenberg's Tarin Morris scored from long range just two minutes later to cut Scranton's lead back to one but the Mules couldn't find an equalizer to finish out the game and Scranton held on to win 3-2.

Junior Ryan Lally (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) got the start in net for the Royals and made two saves before getting relieved by freshman Charlie Smith (Devon, Pa. / Conestoga) who made one save in his debut and earned the win for Scranton.

The Royals will return to action on Tuesday when they head to Delaware Valley for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
