SCRANTON, Pa. - Visiting Catholic scored a pair of goals in the first half, then added another in the second half, as the University of Scranton men's soccer team could not get on the scoreboard on the day in a 3-0 loss to the Cardinals in the Landmark Conference regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the defeat, Scranton finishes their 2017 season with a 10-7-0 overall mark and 3-4-0 in the Landmark Conference. With the win, Catholic ends the regular year with a 7-7-4 mark and 4-2-1 in the Landmark, as the Cardinals clinched a spot in next week's Landmark Playoffs with the victory.
Before the match, Scranton honored their 2017 senior class: Connor Casey (Hatfield, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.), Gavin Coutts (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham), Liam Flynn (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury), James Harris (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade), Tim McGovern (Merrick, N.Y./Chaminade), and Kyle Robbins (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor).
In the opening moments of the contest, Scranton had a chance to score quickly, as sophomore Jon Roberts (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata-Somerville) fired a shot on goal, but Catholic goalie Zachery Tashjy made a diving save to keep the Royals from scoring a fast goal.
Catholic, however, cashed in on their first shot on net for the day, scoring four minutes into the contest to go up, 1-0. For the rest of the half, Catholic kept the Scranton offense at bay, as they only took four more shots the rest of the period. In the 41st minute, the Cardinals added their second goal, to go up, 2-0, into intermission.
In the second half, the defenses of both teams took over, with each team taking just four shots. But, Catholic was able to deliver another goal in the 75th minute to put the Cardinals up for good at 3-0.
Overall in the contest, Catholic outshot Scranton, 13-9, while the Royals held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. In net, Tashjy kept the Royals off the board with the shutout victory, making six saves on the day.
