Michael Hofmeister was hired as the University’s head men’s lacrosse coach on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017.
During his first season at Scranton in 2018, Hofmeister led the Royals to a 10-7 record and a Landmark Conference playoff appearance. The Royals went 4-2 in conference games during the regular season before dropping a 13-7 decision to top-seeded Susquehanna in the conference semifinals. Scranton placed seven players earned All-Landmark Conference honors while seniors Conor Carey, Adam Drury, and Adam Maiale earned All-South Region accolades from the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Association.
Hofmeister came to Scranton after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant at two of the top programs in the region. He spent the 2017 season as an assistant at Roanoke, helping the Maroons go 12-4 and finish tied for first in the regular season in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Prior to that, he was an assistant at York (Pa.) for five seasons, where he helped the Spartans go a combined 66-29 and win the Capital Athletic Conference title in 2016.
A 2010 graduate of Eastern University where he was a team captain and an all-conference selection on the lacrosse field, Hofmeister has extensive experience both on and off the field. At Roanoke, he ran the team’s office and man-up units as the Maroons averaged 15.88 goals per game last season. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and helped prepare scouting reports for each opponent.
During his time at York, Hofmeister worked with the offense on a daily basis and ran the substitution box during games. He was also instrumental in recruiting, scouting, practice planning and alumni and parent relations.
In 2017 at Roanoke, Hofmeister was part of a program that produced five United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans, one USILA Scholar All-American, one North/South All-Star, 11 all-ODAC players and the ODAC Rookie of the Year. The Maroons also spent eight weeks ranked in the top 20, climbing as high as 15th at one point.
In his five seasons at York, Hofmeister helped the Spartans go from 9-7 in his first season to 18-4 and a CAC championship by 2016, a season that included a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals, eight wins against nationally ranked opponents and a school record for wins in a season.
During Hofmeister’s time there, York advanced to the CAC semifinals each season and had four of its six winningest seasons in program history, its first two NCAA Tournament appearance and its first NCAA Tournament victory. He coached the CAC Rookie of the Year three times as well as 11 All-Americans, five USILA Scholar All-Americans, five North/South All-Stars, one CAC Player of the Year, one CAC Scholar Athlete of the Year and 24 all-CAC honorees.
Hofmeister graduated from Eastern with a bachelor of science degree in business management. He has extensive experience as a coach and presenter at numerous lacrosse camps and was the director of the Nike Lacrosse Offense Defense Challenge Camp in Texas and Virginia this summer.
