WILKES BARRE, PA (November 16, 2022) -- Four different scorers finished in double-figures on Wednesday night to lead The University of Scranton men's basketball team (3-0) to a 63-56 win at Wilkes University in the Henry Gymnasium.
Senior guard Stephen Braunstein* (Colts Neck, N.J. / Christian Brothers Academy) paced the with 14 points while graduate student Jackson Danzig* (Clarks Green, Pa. / Abington Heights) added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore forward Will McLoughlin (Glen Rock, N.J. / Glen Rock) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while junior guard Tahaj Parland (Neptune, N.J. / Mater Dei) chipped in 12 points for Scranton.
The Royals got their first bucket of the night on a three-pointer from Braunstein following a steal from freshman guard Jon Spatola (Marlboro, N.J. / Marlboro). The game went back and forth until the middle stages of the first half when Scranton went on an 11-0 run to take a 24-13 lead with 7:46 remaining in the half. The Royals managed to increase their lead to 12, heading into the break with a 33-21 lead over the Colonels.
Wilkes made a push to start the second half, cutting Scranton's lead to just 1 less than five minutes in. A three-pointer from Drake Marshall at the 13:35 mark gave Wilkes its first lead of the game since the early stages of the first half. The game went back and forth into the final minutes of action and still remained tied with 4:09 left on the clock.
Braunstein and Spatola each sunk a pair of clutch free throws to move Scranton ahead 57-53 with just over two minutes remaining. Parland then followed suit and sunk a pair of free throws on a one-and-one in the final thirty seconds to secure the win for the Royals.
Wilkes won the battle on the boards 37-31 but Scranton held a 10-6 advantage in steals in the contest.
The men's basketball team returns to action this weekend when they head to Stevens for a 2:00 PM tipoff.
