Field Hockey Places 22 on NFHCA National Academic Squad, Tied for Second-Most in the Country

GILBERT, Ariz. – The University of Scranton field hockey team saw 22 players earn 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad honors on Wednesday as the Royals tied for the second-most honorees among NCAA Division III institutions in the nation.

Scranton and Amherst tied for second out of the 147 Division III institutions to have at least one player recognized, trailing only Williams, which had 23 National Academic Squad selections. 

At total of 1,746 field hockey players across Division III were honored with the awards, which recognizes student-athletes who have achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year. 

Earning the award for Scranton this year are five seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, and eight freshmen:

Seniors: Julie Burrill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), Erin Dolphin (Orangeburg, N.Y./Pearl River), Katherine McVeagh (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township), senior Cyan Scarduzio (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining), Elizabeth Tolley (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham)

Juniors: Lauren Earnshaw (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), Nicolette Keale (Wall Township, N.J./Wall), Claire McAllister (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), and Brianna Witt (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern).

Sophomores: Annie Amentler (Drums, Pa./Hazleton Area), Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Megan Gallagher (Thorndale, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Sheila Newby (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), Brittany Schumann (Andover, N.J./Newton)

Freshman: Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Shannon Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Amanda Gerenza (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), Kait Hartsky (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), Ellie Lindauer (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), Ashley Moore (Conshohocken, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy), Madison Nord (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll), Caitlin Schreiber (Buffalo, N.Y./Clarence Central)

Burrill, McVeagh, and Tolley each became four-year recipients of the National Academic Award with today's announcement. 

Last week, Scranton was honored with the 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for achieving a team grad point average of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester as the Royals collected the award for the seventh consecutive year.
