Senior forward Meredith Campbell (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored twice and The University of Scranton field hockey team's defense stymied 16th-ranked Muhlenberg over the final 64 minutes as the Royals posted a 2-1 win in the season opener on Friday at Fitzpatrick Field.

Campbell scored the game-winner in the 60th minute when she dribbled through the right side of the Muhlenberg defense and beat the goalie with a low shot. She also scored on a penalty stroke in the 20th minute after the Mules had taken a 1-0 lead just 5:46 into the game.

The Scranton defense was impressive for most of the afternoon, holding Muhlenberg to just seven shots in the match, including just one after halftime. The backline of senior Jessica Kaplowitz (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), sophomore Caroline Mullen (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Christina Motz (Glenside, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) consistently thwarted any push by the Mules. When they did get through, freshman goalkeeper Jenna Cyr (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) was solid, making five saves, including four early in the match.

Scranton finished the game with an 18-7 edge in shots and a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. Both goalkeepers made five saves. Campbell led the Royals with a team-high eight shots.

The Royals will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Elmira, N.Y. to take on Elmira at 1 p.m.
