The University of Scranton women's swimming & diving team pulled out a thrilling 135-127 victory over Catholic in the team's home opener in the Byron Center on Saturday.

The meet came down to the final event, the women's 200 freestyle relay, and the Royals came through with first- and third-place finishes to score 13 points in the event to Catholic's four, good enough to overcome a one-point deficit entering the event. The team of freshman Amber Diehl (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt), junior Elizabeth Howlin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), senior Lucy Fulton (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) and sophomore Lauren Byrne (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) secured the win by taking first place with a time of 1:41.40.

Byrne had a big day, winning a pair of individual events and swimming on two winning relay teams. She won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.66 and the 100 freestyle in 55.20 seconds, and joined Diehl, senior Susan Neggia (Fair Lawn, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and sophomore Audrey Campo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) on the winning 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:51.93.

Campo also had a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 200 freestyle in 2:03.84 and the 50 freestyle in 25.47 seconds. She was also second in the 100 fly.

Senior Claire Mason (Livingston, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic Academy) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.55 and the 200 individual medley in 2:20.09. She also had a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Neggia chipped in with a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke and sophomore Marycate O'Sullivan (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) added a second in the 200 fly.

The women's swimming & diving team will return to action on Friday, Nov. 2, when the Royals host King's at 5 p.m.
