Senior Dan D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) of The University of Scranton wrestling team continued his outstanding season last week by winning all six of his matches and claiming the 197-pound championship at Saturday's RIT Invitational. As a result of his performance, he has been named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week.
D'Agostini kicked off his week with a technical fall at the 6:09 mark of the 197-pound match on Tuesday at East Stroudsburg as the Royals suffered a narrow, 26-24 setback to the Warriors.
The win at East Stroudsburg was just the start of a huge week for D'Agostini, who reeled off five straight victories at the RIT Invitational on Saturday to claim the 197-pound title. He totaled two technical falls and three decisions on the day to win the championship in a bracket made up of wrestlers from 16 different institutions.
D'Agostini opened the tournament with a 16-0 technical fall before advancing to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 decision. In his quarterfinal match, he notched another technical fall, this one by a 16-1 margin, to move onto the semifinals.
D'Agostini edge WPI's Michael Curtis in the semifinals with a 5-4 decision before claiming the championship with a 7-4 decision over Thiel's Gage Gladysz in the title match to cap off his perfect week.
Now a winner of 14 straight matches, D'Agostini sports an impressive, 18-1 record on the season including a perfect 9-0 mark in dual meets. He is also 86-27 for his career and ranks fourth all-time in Scranton history for career victories.
D'Agostini and the Royals will compete for the final time in the calendar year on Saturday, December 22 at the Wilkes Open.
