SCRANTON, Pa. - A goal by freshman Erin Ahern (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) with six minutes left proved to be the difference, as the University of Scranton women's lacrosse team ended their 2017 regular season on a high note on Saturday, edging non-conference foe Stockton, 11-10, at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the win, the Royals finish the regular season with a 10-5 overall mark, while Stockton fell to 9-5 overall with the defeat. Before today's game, seniors Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) and Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) were honored for their contributions over the last four years, as well.

In the opening frame, Scranton looked poised to put Stockton away early, as the Royals opened a 4-0 lead on the visiting Ospreys in the first 12 minutes of action.

After Stockton scored with 15 minutes left to make it a 4-1 game, the Royals proceeded to tally three of the next five goals scored to open a 7-3 lead with 6:58 left in the period.

To end the first half, Stockton scored two of the final three goals of the frame to cut the Scranton lead down to 8-5 at intermission.

The momentum built up at the end of the half by Stockton carried over into the second half, as they kept the Royals offense at bay for most of the period.

On offense, Stockton scored four of the first five goals of the half to come all the way back to tie the game at 9-9 with 26 minutes left in regulation.

Scranton grabbed their lead back with 25:41 left, as sophomore Elena Gallo (East Meadow, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored off an assist from freshman Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) to lift the Royals to a 10-9 lead.

Stockton, however, tied the game back up at 10-all on a goal with 12:20 left.

With 6:55 to go, Ahern scored the eventual game-winner on a successful free position shot, giving Scranton an 11-10 lead. From there, the Royals defense took over, as they forced four Stockton turnovers over the final six minutes of action to clinch the victory.

Overall, junior Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) was the leading scorer on the day for Scranton, recording a hat trick for the second straight game. Sophomore Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had two goals and three assists, while Kerr finished with two goals on the day.

On defense, junior Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyrertown) and freshman Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) had four groundballs, apiece, to lead the charge, while freshman Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Rossetti spilt the day in net, each making five saves, apiece on the day.

Scranton will now set their sights on the 2017 Landmark Conference Playoffs, which will begin on Wednesday.

The Royals, who will be the number two seed in the tournament, host third-seed Elizabethtown in a semifinal contest on Wednesday. Things get underway at Fitzpatrick Field at 4 p.m.
