The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team pushed their record to 6-1 on the year this past week, in part due to solid play on the defensive end by freshman Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) in a pair of matches.
For her efforts, Russo was named the Landmark Conference's Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, marking the first time in her career that she has earned the honor.
Russo opened the week collecting a match-high seven ground balls in Scranton's 14-7 win over Marywood on Thursday night. She also had three draw controls in the victory over the Pacers.
On Saturday, Scranton rolled to a 20-2 win on the road at Goucher in their Landmark Conference opener for the year, as Russo and the Royals defense held the Gophers to just 10 shots in the victory. In the win, Russo collected three more ground balls, and posted three draw controls, as well.
For the year, Russo has 20 ground balls and 12 draw controls, while also recording two assists on the offensive end.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Catholic in a Landmark Conference match at Fitzpatrick Field. Things are slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
