SCRANTON, Pa. - Senior Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) scored six goals - four of which came in the first half - as the University of Scranton women's lacrosse team rolled past visiting Lebanon Valley, 17-5, on Sunday at Fitzpatrick Field.
With the win, Scranton moved to 3-0 on the young season, while Lebanon Valley fell to 0-2 with the defeat.
The start, the match was close between the squads, as both the Royals and Dutchmen scored two goals, apiece, in the first five minutes to make it a 2-2 match. Kerr got the scoring kicked off for Scranton with a pair of unassisted goals at the beginning of the match.
From here, however, Scranton dominated, scoring nine unanswered goals over the last 20 minutes of the first half to take an insurmountable 11-2 lead into intermission.
Kerr scored two more goals in this time frame, while sophomore Kaitlyn Murphy (Somers, N.Y./North Salem) scored three consecutive goals to end the first half.
Sophomore Christine Olert (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also scored twice in the final 20 minutes of the period, while junior Kailyn Angelo (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Acad.) rounded out the scoring barrage for Scranton with a goal of her own.
On the assist end to finish off the period, freshman Meghan Loomie (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) ended the half with three assists, while fellow freshman Becca Russo (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and sophomore Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had two assists, apiece. Kerr also added an assist to her first half, as well.
Up by nine goals to enter the second half, freshman Shannon Warburton (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) quickly scored to give the Royals a 10-goal lead at 12-2. LVC would answer the score with a pair of goals, cutting the Scranton lead back to 12-4 with 18 minutes left.
But, Scranton ended the match strong, scoring five unanswered goals over a seven minute span to go up 17-4.
Warburton, Murphy and Kerr scored in the time-frame, while junior Colleen O'Rourke (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Acad.) ended the scoring on the day for Scranton after scoring a goal with five minutes left.
Assist wise, Olert assisted three of the final five goals Scranton scored and junior Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Acad.) recorded an assist of her own on a goal, as well.
In net, freshman Erin Putnam (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) got the start again and made three saves in the first half to take the victory. Senior Marne Rossetti (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) came on in the second half, making four saves to preserve the win for Scranton.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Morrisville State for their first road match of the season. Things get underway at 1 p.m.
