SCRANTON, Pa.—Drew University scored three goals in the final two minutes of play to pull out a 13-12 victory over The University of Scranton women’s lacrosse team in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Junior Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored the game-winning goal with just nine seconds remaining as the Rangers improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The loss drops Scranton to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Landmark.
Junior Krysta Cento (Garden City, NY/Garden City) led Drew with six goals, Kleinman finished with three goals and four assists, and senior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) had a goal and two assists.
Scranton was led by senior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) with three goals and senior Erin Green (Merrick, NY/Sandford Calhoun), junior Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), and sophomore Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) contributed two apiece.
The Royals trailed 8-7 at intermission and 9-7 early in the second half before Sullivan scored twice during a 6-1 run that propelled Scranton to a 12-10 lead.
Drew, however, cut the margin to 12-11 on an unassisted goal by freshman Morgan Mason (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and tied it on a goal by Cento that was set up by Kleiman with 1:24 left. The Royals won the ensuing draw control, but turned it over and Ranger senior Alexandra Mattiace came up with a ground ball.
In the closing seconds, Gagliano found Kleiman open in front of the net for the game-winner.
Freshman Jadin James (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) relieved freshman Gianna Minogue (Sayville, NY/Sayville) early in the first half and made eight saves to pick up the win in goal for the Rangers. Scranton junior goalkeeper Emily Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) was credited with seven saves.
Scranton also received a goal apiece from freshmen Meghan Kerr (Warwick, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) and Nikole Sullivan (Sparkill, NY/Tappan Zee) and senior Shannon Ginty (Mineola, NY/Sacred Heart Academy).
Sullivan’s three goals today give her 129 for her career, which is the fifth most in Royals’ history.
Scranton returns to action this Monday, March 17, against Keene St. (NH) in a game to be played in Clermont, Florida, as part of a Spring Break trip.
