The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team appears well-positioned to make its fourth straight Landmark Conference playoff appearance and fifth in the past six seasons.
The Royals were chosen third in the preseason poll of the conference's coaches, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. Scranton received 30 points, trailing only defending conference champion Susquehanna (54 points, four first-place votes) and Catholic (49 points, three first-place votes).
Drew was fourth with 28 points, followed by Elizabethtown (27), Goucher (17) and Merchant Marine Academy (12). Elizabethtown is in its first season as a Landmark Conference member in women's lacrosse, and will become a full-time member in all sports this coming fall.
Scranton and second-year head coach Cindy Wilson are coming off a season in which it went 9-6 overall and 2-2 in Landmark play. The Royals were the third seed in the conference playoffs and lost a semifinal at Catholic, 19-12.
The Royals welcome back 13 players who saw action on last year's squad, including junior midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), who was a first-team all-Landmark Conference selection after finishing with 52 goals and 55 points. She also earned second-team all-Boardwalk Region honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Goss's 52 goals are tied for ninth-most in a single season in Scranton history, tied with senior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional), who scored 52 in 2012. Last season, Sullivan had 34 goals and 36 total points en route to being named second-team all-Landmark Conference.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) joins Goss and Sullivan as the top three returning scorers after scoring 14 goals and adding six assists as a freshman last spring.
Scranton will open its season on Wednesday, Feb. 26, when the Royals host Lebanon Valley at 4 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. They will open Landmark play on Friday, March 14, when they host Drew at 4 p.m., also at Fitzpatrick Field.
