ANNVILLE, Pa.—Lebanon Valley College held off a late rally to defeat The University of Scranton, 12-11, in women’s lacrosse non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Senior attacker Allison McGinniss (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) led the Flying Dutchmen, now 3-0, with three goals, sophomore defender Anna Pagels (Hampstead, Md./North Caroll) tallied a pair, and senior midfielder Hana Krechel (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) and sophomore midfielder Bailey Benz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) combined for two goals and four assists.
Freshman midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) led a balanced Scranton attack with a season-high three goals, senior attacker Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and sophomore midfielder Emily Goss (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) finished with two goals and an assist apiece, and junior attacker Christine Dredger (Glen Head, NY/Lady of Mercy Academy) chipped in two goals as the Royals fell to 0-2.
Scranton got off to a rocky start, very similar to last Saturday’s 12-9 loss to Haverford College when it fell behind 5-0 after the first eight minutes of play. Today, Scranton trailed 6-1 early, 9-5 at intermission, and 12-7 with 17 minutes remaining before whittling LVC’s lead down to two, 12-10, on a goal by Goss with 5:09 left.
The Flying Dutchmen then won the ensuing draw control and salted away much of the remainder of the clock before Dredger scored with four seconds remaining to set the final score.
The Royals also received a goal and an assist from senior midfielder Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and a goal from junior attacker Kerry Sullivan (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional). In the first start of her college career, sophomore goalkeeper Emily Towey (Abington, Pa./Abington) made 12 saves. Senior goalkeeper Erica Ameigh (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) stopped four shots for Lebanon Valley.
Scranton will return to action this Thursday, March 14, against Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
