Junior forward Sofia Recupero (Whitestone, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) of The University of Scranton women's basketball team recorded one of the strongest weeks of her career last week in helping the Lady Royals to three victories, and for her efforts, she was named the National Jesuit Player of the Week on Tuesday evening.

The National Jesuit Player of the Week is selected weekly by the The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS) committee. The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS) is a program developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in 2008 to bring greater awareness of Jesuit education and its shared mission through the more than 80 games played by men's and women's basketball teams every season.

The nation's 28 Jesuit colleges and universities are part of a global network of 189 institutions of higher learning that are rooted in the traditions of academic excellence, service, and a faith that does justice.

Recupero, who is the first non Division-I female student-athlete to take the National Jesuit Player of the Week award on the women's side this season, had a banner week last week, on her way to also earning Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors for the first time of her career on Monday.

On the week, Recupero did a little bit of everything for the Lady Royals, as Scranton improved to 9-0 on the season with home victories over York (89-46), No. 22 Ithaca (65-53), and Capital (62-52). She hit double figures in all three triumphs in the scoring column for Scranton, kicking the week off on Monday with a 13 point, seven rebound effort against York.

Up against a strong Ithaca team on Saturday to open the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic, Recupero put together a career game, scoring 22 points (and pulling down seven rebounds) to lead Scranton to the 12-point win. She capped the week off by scoring 10 points on Sunday against Capital, and for her efforts, was named Scranton's team MVP for the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic.

For the year, Recupero has started every game but one for the Lady Royals. She is averaging 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds a contest, while shooting 56.5 percent from the floor, the best mark on the team.

Scranton, who is now 10-0 on the year after a win last night at Gwnedd Mercy (66-45), is ranked sixth in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 and seventh in the WBCA Top 25. The Lady Royals are idle through the Christmas holiday, returning to action on Dec. 30 when they travel to the WPI Holiday Tournament. In their first game, the Lady Royals take on Rogers Williams at 7 p.m.
