Senior Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory) of The University of Scranton men’s tennis team had a week he won’t soon forget, winning seven times to help the Royals go 4-0 and clinch the top seed in the conference playoffs last week. As a result, Morra has been named Landmark Conference Player of the Week.
Morra went 7-1 on the week as the Royals won four Landmark Conference matches and extended their winning streak to six. While the match featured his only loss of the week, it was his singles victory against Drew at Royal Courts that gave the Royals the deciding point in a 5-4 win that handed Drew its first conference loss in 13 years, snapping a 110-match winning streak.
With the Royals trailing 3-0 after singles play, they rallied to win five of six singles matches for the win. The match came down to Morra at No. 3 singles, and he rallied after losing the first set to pull out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win to clinch the victory.
Morra also posted two wins apiece in each of the Royals other three victories during the week – 9-0 at Juniata on Monday, April 15; 9-0 at Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, April 20; and 9-0 over Goucher on Sunday, April 21, at Royal Courts.
On the season, Morra is 9-2 in singles play, including 7-0 against conference opponents, and 7-3 in doubles play, including 6-1 against conference foes.
The Royals open the Landmark Conference playoffs on Tuesday, April 23, when they host Juniata in a semifinal at 4 p.m. at Royal Courts.
