Trio Leads Royals Past Moravian, 5-4

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Juniors Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and Jonathan Russo (Madison, N.J./Madison) and freshman Harry Bonet (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle College High School) each had a pair of wins to help The University of Scranton men’s tennis team edge Moravian, 5-4, in a Landmark Conference match at Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club on Wednesday.
The win moves the Royals to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in Landmark Conference action while Moravian falls to 5-3 overall, 2-3 in Landmark play.
McGurrin posted a win at No. 1 singles over Moravian senior Kevin Holze (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), 6-4, 6-3. He also teamed with fellow junior Bennett Kelley (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Bonet stayed hot in singles play, improving to 8-0 this season with a win at No. 4 singles over Greyhounds’ freshman Lewis Cooper (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), 6-2, 6-2. He also teamed with Russo for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Russo knocked off Moravian junior Brad Kutcha (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park), 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
The win keeps Scranton tied for second in the conference with Catholic. The Royals have the tie-breaker over the Cardinals by way of a 6-3 win on Thursday, April 5.
Scranton returns to the courts on Saturday, April 14, when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. to face Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m.
