The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team is fourth in the preseason poll of Landmark Conference coaches, but one glance at the results shows that just about any of the seven teams have a shot at the title.
The Royals received 34 points in the poll, which was released on Tuesday. They are just one point behind third-place Merchant Marine Academy, which received one first-place vote, and three behind second-place Susquehanna, which garnered two first-place votes. Goucher sits atop the poll with 42 points and three-first place votes.
Drew was in fifth place with one first-place vote and 30 points, followed by Catholic (24 points) and Washington & Jefferson (15).
Scranton head coach Doug Sage enters his second season with 29 players returning from last year’s team that went 8-7 and reached the Landmark Conference semifinals, the third straight season and fifth time in six years the Royals have reached the Landmark playoffs.
Senior midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) is the top returning offensive threat from last season after finishing with eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points. Senior attacker Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore midfielder Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) also return after tying for third on the team with 13 goals apiece last season.
The Royals will open their season on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. to face Farmingdale State at 1 p.m. They play their home opener on Wednesday, March 5, at 4 p.m. against York (Pa.) at Fitzpatrick Field, and open Landmark Conference play on Friday, March 14, when they host Catholic at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
