SCRANTON, Pa.--Sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) made seven of his eight saves in the second half to lead The University of Scranton to an 11-4 victory over the Merchant Marine Academy in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
McKaba stopped three shots alone in the third period as the Royals broke open a close game by scoring four times to break away from a 4-3 halftime lead and take a comfortable 9-3 lead into the fourth period.
The Royals relied on a balanced attack on the offensive end today, getting two goals apiece from sophomores Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Preparatory) and Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) and seniors Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Matt Tibbitts (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), to move to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the Landmark.
Scranton, which held a 44-25 advantage in shots and a 44-29 margin in ground balls, also received a goal and two assists from senior John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Preparatory), a goal and an assist from junior Michael Bernier (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’a Preparatory), and a goal from sophomore Andrew Callaghan (Maplewood, NJ/St. Peter’s Preparatory).
Senior Brett Crawford (Arnold, Md./Severn School) led the Mariners, now 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference, with two goals and junior Troy Smith (Deer Park, Texas/Deer Park) and sophomore Robert Tiritto (Centerport, NY/Chaminade) chipped in one apiece. Junior goalkeeper Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.,/Weston) finished with 13 saves.
Defensively, the Royal backline of senior Ryan Saraceni (Lansdale, Pa./LaSalle) and juniors Colin Payani (Bedminster, NJ/Bernards) and Peter Meehan (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) held the Mariners scoreless for 33 minutes after Crawford scored on a man-up situation with 5:59 left in the second period.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Thursday, April 17, against Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
