The University of Scranton men’s basketball team will spend its summer in a fairly typical manner for college students – they’ll be spending a week away from home with their buddies. The only difference is, they’ll be doing it within the framework of their team while traveling to Canada.
Head coach Carl Danzig and his Royals will depart for a seven-day trip north of the border on Sunday, July 28, and return on Saturday, Aug. 3. They will play three games against Canadian teams while also touring some of the country’s most popular destinations.
“I’m looking forward to the team building and a fun week with the guys, and getting prepared for the upcoming season,” said senior guard Michael Barr.
Scranton will face a team of all-stars from McGill University and Brebeuf College in Toronto on Monday, July 29. Two days later, they will take on University of Laval in Quebec City. The Royals will cap the trip when they face the Brookwood Elite club team in Montreal on Friday, Aug. 2.
“It’s obviously a chance to do some team building and get more familiar with each other, and it’s a chance to build some chemistry for the upcoming season,” head coach Carl Danzig said. “Hopefully this trip will give us a head start because we know we’re playing a challenging schedule in the 2013-14 season.”
Between games, the Royals will tour destinations including the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, historic Quebec City and Old Montreal.
The team won’t just be playing hoops and seeing the sights during their trip. The Royals will also keep a blog throughout the trip, which will be updated by players on a regular basis. Scranton will open its 2013-14 season on Friday, Nov. 15, when they host Immaculata in the opening round of the Radisson Invitational at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Center.
