Junior forward Gretchen Kempf (Warrnington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals and The University of Scranton controlled the action throughout in a 5-0 victory over Goucher College in the Landmark Conference field hockey opener for both schools at Fitzpatrick Field on Sunday afternoon.
Kempf scored her team-leading sixth and seventh goals as the Royals (6-1, 1-0 Landmark) kept the pressure on the Gophers (4-3, 0-1 Landmark) throughout while enjoying a 37-2 advantage in shots and 18-1 in shots on goal.
Senior forward Alicia Tamboia (Wingdale, N.Y./Dover) gave Scranton an early lead when she scored an unassisted goal, her first of the year, at the 6:47 mark of the first half. Kempf scored an unassisted goal eight minutes later to make it 2-0 and forced a Goucher timeout.
The stoppage in play did little to slow Scranton as sophomore forward Caitlin Liberatore (Ambler, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) scored her fourth goal of the season when she tipped in a shot by junior defender Corinne O’Kane (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) with just under five minutes to play in the half.
Scranton kept charging forward after the break, and freshman forward Cassie Mullen (Chester Springs, Md./Villa Maria Academy) added to the lead in the 62nd minute with her third goal of the season, an unassisted tally from three yards out. Kempf closed out the scoring five minutes later when she cracked home a shot from four yards out for her 17th career goal.
The victory was the first in a Landmark Conference opener for Scranton since 2007. The Royals have now scored 10 goals in their last two games, the most in a two-game span since they scored 11 in the first two games of the 2008 season.
Scranton will return to action Wednesday, September 28 in a non-conference matchup against Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
