Senior first baseman Mark Grambo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) had two doubles and a homer and The University of Scranton banged out 14 hits en route to a 10-4 victory over Juniata at Connell Park on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game Landmark Conference series.
Grambo drove in three runs and freshman outfielder Michael Umerich (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) had a pair of RBIs for Scranton, which improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the Landmark Conference. Senior right fielder Sean Butler (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton High) and junior catcher Michael Amaturo (Rye, N.Y./Rye) both had two hits and two runs scored and sophomore designated hitter Eric Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford) had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Royals also received six strong innings from junior Corey Gorman (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin), who struck out 10 while allowing four runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks. Freshman Luke Sheehan (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tossed a pair of scoreless innings and sophomore Kyle Ranck (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) tossed a scoreless ninth.
Juniata (6-7, 1-2 Landmark) scored a pair of first-inning runs on RBIs from junior catcher Cole Walters (Mt. Union, Pa./Mt. Union) and senior first baseman Russell Gray (Johnstown, Pa./Richland).
Scranton answered with three in the bottom of the first as Pizzico had an RBI triple and Butler and sophomore outfielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) added RBIs. The Royals added a run in the second and, after Juniata scored in the top of the third, Scranton tacked on two more for a 6-3 lead. Grambo’s two-run double in the third gave the Royals a cushion.
Grambo then led off the fifth with a solo shot and the Royals added a second run in the stanza when Umerich drove in senior third baseman Matt Rayha (Willow Street, Pa./Penn Manor) with an RBI double. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh for the final scoring.
Juniata also received a solo home run from sophomore infielder Brad Medellin (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land). He finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI. Junior outfielder Ben Merskey (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) had two hits, a run and an RBI and senior outfielder Matthew Fritz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) had a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Swoyersville, Pa. to face Misericordia University at 3:30 p.m.
