SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The University of Scranton got solid pitching in both games and big hits at the right time to post a Landmark Conference doubleheader sweep against Susquehanna, 8-4 and 7-2, on Saturday afternoon at Bollinger Field.
Scranton (11-9, 4-4 Landmark) won the opener behind a solid start from junior lefty Bobby Della Polla (Havertown, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) and strong relief from junior righty Matt Mosko (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough). Della Polla allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks while fanning six in 4 2/3 innings to improve to 3-2 on the season. Mosko escaped a jam in the fifth as part of 2 1/3 shutout innings while striking out four to earn his first save of the season.
The Royals trailed, 2-1, entering the fifth, but scored four times to take the lead. Freshman left fielder Ross Danzig (Clarks Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) had an RBI fielder’s choice in the inning, and the Royals added runs on an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch in the inning.
Susquehanna (12-14, 2-6 Landmark) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Mosko stranded a pair of runners with an inning-ending strikeout. The Royals added a run in the sixth on an RBI by junior shortstop Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and two more in the seventh on a two-run single from senior second baseman Jesse Outhouse (Croton Falls, N.Y./North Salem).
Scranton scored eight runs on just five hits, but drew 11 walks at the plate.
In the second game, junior lefty Corey Gorman (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 3-2.
The Royals trailed, 2-0, going into the fifth, but like the first game, they scored four times in that inning. LeCompte got the scoring started with an RBI single, sophomore outfielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had an RBI and senior first baseman Mark Grambo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) had a two-out, two-run double to cap the inning.
Scranton put the game away with three runs in the seventh as Danzig, Outhouse and junior catcher Michael Amaturo (Rye, N.Y./Rye) had RBI singles. LeCompte, Gaeta, Grambo, Danzig and Outhouse all finished the game with two hits while Gaeta scored twice and Grambo drove in two runs.
Susquehanna was led by sophomore center fielder Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) and freshman shortstop Nick Kennedy (Brookville, Md./Good Council), who each had three hits on the day.
Scranton and Susquehanna will finish the series when Scranton travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a nine-inning game on Monday, April 9, at 3 p.m.
