Pressed into duty at the end of the season, freshman Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson) made the most of her opportunity to be in the University of Scranton women's tennis starting lineup this past week, as she clinched an upset victory over Drew in the Landmark Conference Semifinals on Wednesday with victories at both doubles and singles.
For her efforts, Kelly was named the University of Scranton's Athlete of the Week for the period ending May 7, marking the first time in her career that she has earned the honor.
On Wednesday, Kelly was put into the Royals starting line-up at number two doubles and number six singles, marking only the third time the entire season that she was put into that role.
The freshman came up huge for Scranton on the afternoon, as she captured an 8-4 win in doubles with partner and fellow freshman Nastashia DeNunzio (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore), then clinched the 5-2 upset victory for Scranton over the top-seeded Rangers with a straight set, 6-3, 6-1 win in singles.
The win catapulted the Royals into the Landmark Conference Championship Match for the third time in four seasons, as Scranton unfortunately dropped a 5-0 decision to Elizabethtown in the title match on Sunday.
