Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) both won six matches apiece last week to lead The University of Scranton men's tennis team to three wins as the Royals secured the #2 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs. For their efforts, they have been named co-recipients of The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week honor.
Swope won all six of his matches, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles competition. He won a pair of singles matches at the #4 flight, posting a 6-0, 6-2 over Drew and a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at Juniata. Bumped up to #3 singles on Saturday at Susquehanna, Swope defeated his opponent from the River Hawks, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Swope won all three matches he played at the #3 flight including a 8-1 wins against both Drew and Susquehanna along with an 8-2 victory versus Juniata.
For the season, Swope is 11-3 in singles matches and 8-2 in doubles play.
Harkins also went a perfect 6-0 on the week with a trio of wins in both singles and doubles action. He was victorious twice at #5 singles, with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against his opponent from Drew on Wednesday while topping his foe from Juniata in straight sets on Sunday. He also earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #4 singles on Saturday at Susquehanna.
In doubles pay, Harkins won all three of his matches at the #2 flight. He led the Royals to a 8-2 decision against Drew, an 8-4 win against Susquehanna, and a 9-7 decision versus Juniata to close the week.
Harkins sports a 10-3 record in singles matches this season and is 8-2 in doubles action.
Scranton will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday with a non-conference match against Clarks Summit starting at 4:00 p.m. on the Royal Courts.
